Migrating, maintaining and evolving a university’s TYPO3 platform
Took a large university TYPO3 site through two major migrations (v10 → v12 → v13), built a zero-downtime CI/CD pipeline, and keep it maintained and growing with new features.
TYPO3 developer & DevOps
The challenge
The university’s TYPO3 site needed a major version migration for security and performance, a better backend for editors, and a reliable, repeatable deployment process — then a partner who would keep it current and growing rather than leaving it to age.
The approach
- 1
Migrated the platform from TYPO3 v10 to v12 and, most recently, on to v13 — keeping it current for security, performance and modern extension support.
- 2
Added editor-focused backend improvements, including a front-end mask for creating and filtering continuing-education courses in a protected area (TYPO3, Fluid, PHP), covered by PHPUnit tests, plus GDPR-compliant Matomo analytics.
- 3
Established a GitLab CI/CD pipeline that builds Docker images and deploys to the VPS with zero downtime — and continue to maintain the site and ship new features on an ongoing basis.
The result
A platform kept continuously current across major TYPO3 versions, an easier backend for editors, and a steady stream of new features — a trusted relationship running for over three years and counting.
